So when I saw this gorgeous light hitting the coast with a stormy sky offshore I grabbed my opportunity. The light, like often in these situations was fleeting so in this brief window of light I compiled this image.

In the form of a spectacular lightning show that literally lasted ALL night and the best thing was I never had to venture more than a few km’s from home!

This particular storm went up on the ranges and persisted putting up strong updraughts for a couple of hours. At the time of this image it was in the vicinity of the quaint little town of Noojee in West Gippsland.

This one comes from up the Vic-NSW border a few weeks ago. I waded out to thigh deep water in the lake to get the desired composition. I waited until the last moment as to have some of the trees in light and others in shadow to add/create some depth and extra interest in the image. Though this may not be as pronounced or as easy to appreciate in the smaller web version here.

We had another drenching system through Victoria in the last couple of days with falls of upto 150mm in parts of the state (see Andrew Brown’s image from this morning).

I shot this image last week in Sth Gippy on my way to my mother’s house. Best we make the most of it (like the grass is growing!) as in a couple of months time we too will more than likely be feeling the dry pinch of summer as well !

This was the second of two storms that came through Bass Strait on Friday (18-11-2011). The first storm was highly electrically active whilst this, the second was larger and initially stronger and after a little while became outflow dominant. Consequently it developed quite a spectacular gustfront on it as it menaced down on the coast (and me).

I was fortunate to experience a couple of spectacular twilights for entree before the main course which was a delicious beast of a supercell.

Waiting patiently in the heat for hours whilst a things began to fire across SW Vic and east NSW, I copped a few SMS’s from people about what I would be missing. Holding firm  under the sun and flat cumulus fields above, watching radar updates of the said development was almost wearing tediously thin by 4pm !

Sticking to my guns paid off though and the sky broke a mere 50km NW of me in my target area, and I headed off for my own bit of action. A very nice supercell rapidly got organised and ploughed its way across the NSW Riverina plains for the next 3hrs with myself at times desperately trying to stay in position in front of it.

It turned out to be an awesome chase with some truly epic scenes and experiences before a 5hr drive home and and up for work 3.5hrs later.

You’ve gotta be in it to win it !  Well…. to have more opportunities to experience it anyway !
